  • How to Become a Veterinarian. Is it the right path for you?

Introduction The need for veterinarians is expected to grow 19 percent from 2023 to 2033. Bureau of Labor Statistics Employment. People love their animals and are willing to pay for the best care available. The road to becoming a veterinarian is challenging, but many find it rewarding. Read below for the steps on how to become a veterinarian to see if this career is a fit for you. Is becoming a veterinarian the right career path for you? Was your childhood dream to become a vet? Loving animals is not enough. You have to love science and be good at science. Even if you are great at science you still have to work hard. Many vets are a one-stop shop for many different kinds of animals. This may include dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, and reptiles, just to name a few. Not to mention each breed of dog tends to have their own specific medical issues. For example, Boston terriers and French bulldogs are brachycephalic causing them to have a higher risk for breathing problems. And hip dysplasia is a main concern with Labrador retrievers. The knowledge they need to have is vast. Veterinarians are also there to prescribe medication and administer necessary vaccines.  How long is vet school and what are the requirements? Four years of an undergraduate degree is the first step. While not mandatory it is preferable to have an undergraduate degree that consists of science. Many schools offer animal science as a major but not all do. If animal science is not an option at your school major in biology, biochemistry, zoology, or microbiology. Four years of vet school is required after finishing undergraduate. The cost on average of 4 years of vet school is roughly $200,000. It is very competitive to get into a veterinarian school. Besides being such a difficult program there are only 30 accredited vet schools listed with the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Veterinary school graduates receive a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree. To be considered grades are important. Focus on your grades in your undergraduate degree. Most vet schools will require a GPA of 3.5 in undergraduate. Display your love and experience with working with animals. Work part-time as a vet tech or volunteer at an animal shelter to get that experience. The veterinarian career paths: Just like with medical doctors treating people, there are so many specialties you can branch out to for animals. General vet for small animals. This is the vet you take your dog and cat to for commonplace checkups and illnesses. General vet for large animals. This is a vet that treats farm animals such as cows and pigs. Equine Veterinarian for all the needs of a horse.  Oncologist vets treat cancer in animals. My dog was treated by a radiation oncologist for his brain tumor. Keep in mind that most are going to work in larger cities. There were no oncologists for radiation in RI and we did have to go to Boston. Neurologists treat any neurology issues such as the initial diagnosis of a brain tumor. Cardiologists can help with any heart-related diseases.  Dermatologists treat animals with skin issues. If you’ve ever had a dog with a skin issue you know it can be frustrating and time-consuming. Orthopedic surgeons are there to take care of fractures or torn ligaments. Veterinarians at a zoo have a list of duties. They check in on the animals, ensure they are fed the right diets, and are available for any emergencies that may arise. Research Veterinarians research cures for illnesses and viruses and new drugs available. Veterinary Dentist dental cleaning, extractions, and oral surgery. End-of-life care vet. There are vets in my area who make end-of-life house calls. They will typically arrange to have the dog cremated and the ashes returned to you. We did use this service when it was time to say goodbye and I do not regret it. My dog was able to be in the most comfortable atmosphere. He had been through enough and I needed it to be as calming as possible and bringing him out of the house to the vet’s office would have been stressful for him.   What salary can a veterinarian expect? According to US News & Money general small animal veterinarians made a   median salary of $119,100 in 2023. Specialties typically make more. The average salary of a veterinarian surgeon in the US is $368,000 according to Zip Recruiter. Zip Recruiter also states the average research veterinarian salary in the United States as of January 2025 is $79.58 an hour or $165,527 per year. The career of a veterinarian can be stressful and fast-paced but also rewarding. Do your research to determine if this is the career path for you.

  • How to Start a Greeting Card Business Dedicated to the Love of Dogs

How to Start a Greeting Card Business Dedicated to the Love of Dogs Have you ever gone to the store and spent too much time agonizing over the card selection? Nothing fits what you want to say. You either leave the store without a card or settle for one you figure is good enough. Everyone loves dogs! Just seeing pictures of dogs produces a smile for most of us. Combine that smile with the mental health benefits of receiving a nice message from a loved one. If you want to combine your love of dogs with starting a business now may be the time to start a greeting card business. Did you know that receiving a handwritten card from someone you love is proven to alleviate feelings of  isolation and depression ?  This is according to the Thought Catalog. It is beneficial to not only the receiver but also the giver. Read below for a guide on how to start a greeting card business with your dog in mind to lift the spirits of others. 1. Research and branding phase: Brainstorm the name of your business. Check if your name is available as a domain and on various social media platforms. This allows marketing on social media and the ability to expand to your own website in the future. The logo can be a photo of your dog if they are the star of your business. There are so many tools that can help you on your journey. Canva and Adobe Express have tools to help you create a logo and both have free options. 2. Design: What types of cards will you be selling? Some options are: Photos of your dog Drawings of your dog or other dogs Paintings of dogs Graphic art Cute or funny sayings If you are taking snapshots of your pup, remember their limitations. Harrison was my beloved dog who passed away and would ham it up for photos. I made many greeting cards with his picture. We also have Piper who politely declines a nice photo. She prefers to live here rent-free and that’s fine! If you are great at artwork, you can draw or paint dogs. Do you have a way with words but struggle with the art? Hiring freelance artists is always an option through sites such as Fiverr or Upwork. Check trademarks through the United States Patent and Trademark Office before including any sayings to ensure they are available to use. Do some research to see what is popular but not oversaturated. If selling on Etsy, Erank is a good tool to use. This tool will tell you how many people are searching for specific keywords and the competition. And Erank offers a free version which is great at the beginning of your journey. The average Etsy store has at least 50 greeting cards but you have to start somewhere.  Sometimes I say just start instead of getting so bogged down in the ideas and rules that you end up stuck. Idea paralysis and perfection are real things. If you want to start with 10 cards- start with 10 cards. There are no real rules. When starting a greeting card business include the typical birthday, Christmas, Mother’s Day, graduation, wedding, baby and bridal shower, and Valentine’s Day. But don’t forget about: Pet bereavement Getting a new dog Mental health Encouragement New job Anniversary New baby Manifesting Galentine’s Day LGBTQ+ Cards in Spanish Blank cards Minimalist cards An assortment of cards so buyers are prepared for every event. Get well soon! 3. Tools and production:   First, decide if you will print the cards yourself vs having an outside company print them for you. If producing yourself you will need the following supplies: Printer with high-resolution printing capabilities and can print cardstock.  Some are specific for printing greeting cards. Cardstock. Do some research to find the best deals and quality. Envelopes. Some cardstock comes with envelopes but not all. Packing material to ship. A rigid or bubble wrap envelope. Some also use a protective sleeve around the card. Camera to take photos. This can be the camera on your phone or something more professional. Software such as Canva, Adobe, GIMP, or Inkspace to create and edit your designs.  The second option is having the cards printed through a print-on-demand business. Besides printing, they will mail the card directly to the consumer. The last option is to use a bulk printing press to have the cards printed. This requires you to maintain the inventory and mail it directly to the buyer.   4. Where to sell: How will you be distributing your cards? If you are going with print-on-demand there are several places to sell: Etsy Zazzle Redbubble Amazon Merch Society 6 Walmart You may also create a website and sell print-on-demand through that. Some options that allow print-on-demand integration are Shopify, Wix, or Squarespace. Have a handsome holiday! If you will be selling the cards while maintaining inventory you have several options: Etsy Amazon A website you create. Just to name a few you may select Wix, Shopify, Squarespace, or Bluehost. Farmer's markets and craft fairs Check with local gift stores. I have also seen greeting cards in liquor stores and at the car wash. Ask small businesses -you never know! A less lucrative but maybe easier path is to submit your cards and ideas to such companies as: Uncommon Goods Blue Mountain Arts Oatmeal Studios Calypso Cards 5. Marketing: Show behind-the-scenes process. If you take pics of your dog include that process. Post daily on Instagram. When posting daily include examples of the cards you offer and customer testimonials. Mail cards to those in need and encourage others to do the same. Send to kids in the hospital and veterans who have reached milestone birthdays. The joy of receiving mail as kids and adults is real.  So much is in digital today. Stress the benefits of a card in the mail. Start or join a Facebook group. There is a Facebook group dedicated to sending cards to others as a random act of kindness.   6. Extras: Think of small items you can add. If you are mailing out the cards consider including a related extra for a small fee.  Some options include: Stickers Bookmark Mini pen Pin Magnet It will be easy to expand into artwork prints by using your cards. Another option that goes hand in hand with cards is party décor. Eventually, you can teach others your process with a class or a workshop. Consider writing an eBook about your process. Include the moments you enjoyed but don’t forget the obstacles and how you overcame them. If you have been dreaming of starting your line of greeting cards now is the time! This is a business you can start small with as a side hustle on the weekend. Or maybe you are ready to dive in head first and go for it!

I recently saw a comment on social media that someone wanted to start walking dogs as their profession. But was hesitant due to feedback from their family. Apparently, dog walking was not a real career or something you should be proud of.  You can definitely turn dog walking into a real business and absolutely be proud! Why shouldn’t we enjoy what we do 40 + hours a week? Let’s be proud of doing something we love.  Isn’t that the real American dream? No one says I wish I hated my job.  Let’s turn dog walking into a real business. Life is short. Don’t sit in a cubicle if you don’t have to. 10 ways to make your dog walking business more professional: 1. Some steps to take during the initial start. Brainstorm and choose a professional name. Register your business with the state or town you reside in. While selecting a name make sure you can also find it as a domain to start a website. While selecting a name is important don’t get too bogged down with agonizing over this. Give yourself an hour or two to brainstorm. You can waste unnecessary time on this step. Write a business plan. Include the following in a business plan: mission statement, what you will offer, marketing strategy, and financial projections. 2. Start an LLC.  An LLC is a limited liability company.  LLC is a type of business that offers protection of liability from your personal assets. It also shows credibility as a business owner. You can meet with an attorney in your area to create an LLC. The fee for this will vary greatly depending on the lawyer and your location. The range is $1000-$2500. If you can afford it and want the hand holding this may be the option for you. If you don’t have the funds, online is the best place to start.  The average price online through a company like LegalZoom is under $200. You can also visit your state’s Secretary of State website to set up your LLC. There are a ton of YouTube videos that will walk you through the process of establishing an LLC. 3. Hire a virtual assistant. This is easier and cheaper than ever. Nothing says you are turning your dog walking into a real business than an assistant. Websites such as Fiverr and Upwork allow you to hire someone for as little as an hour a week. There is quite a range of fees for assistants. They vary from $15-75 per hour. It will depend on what you need. Be sure to read the reviews to ensure you find a good match. Hire them for an hour each week. Have them do the tasks you hate. They can send out emails signed by “your assistant”.  Ask Sunday is a company that offers assistants for 10 hours each month. The fee for 10 hours is $129. hire an assistant Some of the services an assistant will offer include: Marketing Scheduling Sending out emails Content writing Making and returning phone calls 4. Physical promotion material. Business cards are fairly cheap and can still be effective. Vistaprint and Staples are just two of the places you can have them printed. Even if I have no desire to keep a business card, I will snap a photo of it so I can refer to it later. Some people will still put them on their refrigerator. Create flyers and leave them in mailboxes in ideal neighborhoods or at dog-friendly condo and apartment complexes. Create a vinyl magnet for your car with your business name and contact information. Refrigerator magnets are still popular. Add your name to a magnet that provides instructions on how to give the Heimlich to a dog. People are more apt to keep that. Hand them out to clients, friends, and family. Others may see it and ask about your services. 5. Open a SEP IRA and start investing. This is an IRA for self-employed individuals and small businesses. Successful business owners put their money to work. Meet with a financial advisor if you need help. You can also open an account online. Most self-directed (making your own investment decisions) IRAs have no minimum to start. You could start with $100 or even less. No one needs to know your balance but having an account shows you are serious and are on the right path.   6. Offer additional services. Be a full-service business. Offer yard pet waste removal. Besides pet walking, you may want to consider pet-sitting services as well. Offer to teach the dogs a special trick or some basic commands for puppies. You can even offer to bathe the pup.  Added services equal more money. 7. Get additional certifications. The Association of Professional Pet Sitters (NAPPS) offers a certification. This does involve taking an exam that covers topics such as dog health and behavior. Pet First Aid certification is also great and is typically available through the American Red Cross. Check online or in your area for other organizations that offer it. What a first aid certification will teach: CPR How to recognize seizures Heimlich maneuver Caring for wounds How to recognize poisons before they may be ingested Giving aid to a dog 8. Teach others. This can be done by writing an e-book or starting a website. Provide your journey on becoming a dog walker and starting your own business. Offer tips and ideas to establish yourself as an expert.  It is easier than ever to publish a book.  Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) or Barnes and Noble Press are two options for self-publishing. You may also sell your e-book on Gumroad, Etsy, or through your website. Besides selling an e-book you can start a website and provide articles, tips, and guides on your website.  The website can also list your services and fees. Some other avenues include writing articles on sites like LinkedIn or Medium. If you need assistance with writing your virtual assistant may come in handy. 9. Marketing.  This does go hand in hand with teaching others. There are so many ways to market yourself and your business. Post photos or videos of the dogs you are caring for (of course with the owner's permission). This can be posted on Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok. Take photos of behind the scenes of running your business and provide a day in the life of a dog walker. Offer tips on dog walking and how to get clients. Write articles like how to keep your dog safe while walking in the winter in cold areas or keeping dogs comfortable in extreme heat.  Partner with other websites for guest posts. This may help you be the local dog-walking expert in your area.   10. Join a business group and make partnerships. There are several groups you can join to set yourself apart. The local Chambers of Commerce allow you to become a member if you are registered and have a business license. They typically offer networking events and offer community involvement. Join SCORE. You can find a mentor there or become a mentor. Work with a dog rescue. Become a sponsor and provide your pet walking services. Contact hotels that allow dogs. Their clients may be looking for dog walkers or pet sitters during their stay. As you continue to grow consider hiring. Hiring employees is the ultimate sign of success. This could be additional dog walkers, an assistant, or a business manager. Now you have become a job creator and are contributing to the economy. Hopefully, you feel more comfortable to turn dog walking into a real business. Work is a big part of our lives and there is nothing wrong with enjoying what you do.

Wind chimes. Wind chimes offer a soothing sound to remember the loss of a pet. There are so many personalized ones where you can add a pet’s picture or name. 2. Stepping stone or garden stone. A stepping stone is one of my favorite memorial ideas, especially for a dog that may have spent much time in the yard. Again, they can be personalized. Many businesses offer to add the pet's name or even their photo. 3. Pet angel figurine. An angel figurine provides a little keepsake to remember a loved fur baby. Some offer a general dog or a specific breed. 4. Personalized flowerpot.  I love the idea of growing flowers or a plant as a keepsake to honor a loved pet. 5. Box or urn for ashes. Personalized box or urn for ashes. Decorative boxes or urns are available to personalize and hold your pet’s ashes and are pretty enough to display. 6. Crystal or diamond that has been created from the ashes. This is a pricier option that creates a beautiful keepsake. Wear the stone as a ring or necklace close to your heart as a daily reminder.    7. Memorial blanket. Submit photos of a loved pet to create a custom blanket. Curl up with some wonderful memories. There are 2 honorable mentions I would like to add. Creating a book with photos is such a memorable keepsake. Websites like Shutterfly and Mixbook allow you to create a custom photo book. Include little notes and memories. The second honorable mention is sympathy cards made of seeds. The recipient can plant it and flowers or herbs will grow as a memory.  I have purchased several of these through Etsy. Some cherished gifts I received when my dog passed away: Sweatshirt with my pup’s photo An angel figurine Custom dog artwork Planting a tree in his honor Bottle of wine (necessity) Pet memorial gifts will continue to grow as we look for more ways to honor our loved pets.  If you have an idea don’t be afraid to start.
